What Is HARAKIRI
Harakiri is a traditional Japanese ritual of suicide by disembowelment,
practiced historically by samurai warriors to protect their honor.
• The Word: It literally means "belly-cutting." In Japan,
it is more formally called Seppuku.
• The Goal: It was a formal ceremony to take responsibility for a failure,
prove one's innocence, or avoid the disgrace of capture.
• The Belief: Samurai believed the soul resided in the belly,
so cutting it open was a way to show their pure intentions.
